For Software Startups and Engineering Teams Entering Energy
— You Know Code
— You Know Product
— We Bring the Domain
What you already do better than anyone
You architect systems that scale. You ship fast, iterate on real feedback, and hold technical depth that most domain experts cannot match. You know how to build a product that works, how to instrument it, and how to evolve it without breaking what runs. That is not in question anywhere on this page.
What we know
We know energy markets, regulation, rates, project finance, and how generation projects actually get developed and built. That knowledge comes from doing it: rate cases and transmission formula rate filings across five RTOs, Integrated Resource Plans, expert witness testimony in state and federal proceedings, and generation projects taken from siting through commissioning. We know what the process costs, where it breaks, and what the data does not show.
The gap between a good energy product and a wrong one is almost never a code problem.
Things nobody tells you
Where software teams get surprised
Interconnection is not a form you file.
Queue positions, study timelines, upgrade allocations, and cost responsibility agreements take years. Most software models treat interconnection as a checkbox.
EPC and equipment lead times run in years, not sprints.
Gas turbines, transformers, and switchgear have lead times measured in 18 to 36 months. A product that ignores procurement timelines will give customers wrong answers on day one.
Markets do not clear the way the public data suggests.
LMP, capacity, and ancillary markets have settlement rules, uplift charges, and constraint behavior that public APIs do not expose. The data looks clean. The reality is not.
Policy decides whether your market exists at all.
Federal and state policy sets the rules of the market itself. The Federal Power Act and PURPA define what is even permitted. State legislative and commission action can open or close an entire business line. Policy moves on political timelines, not product timelines.
Tariffs move under your business model.
Utility rate structures change through regulatory proceedings that take 12 to 24 months and produce outcomes no one predicted. A product built on today's tariff can be wrong before it ships.
The buyer at a utility does not speak product.
The person who approves your contract is a resource planner, a rates engineer, or a regulatory attorney. They evaluate risk, not features. Knowing how they think changes how you sell.
Advisory scope
What we advise on
Primary capability 1
Energy Markets & Resource Planning
How utilities plan load, what an Integrated Resource Plan requires, how RTOs and wholesale markets clear, and how industrial users gain direct market access. Including MISO, PJM and ERCOT. If your product touches market data, dispatch logic, or load forecasting, the accuracy of what you ship depends on understanding how these markets actually work.
Primary capability 2
Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC)
EPC is the most misunderstood part of the energy business by outsiders, and the fastest way for a software product to be wrong. We advise on how EPC contracts are structured, what the EPC contractor delivers versus what the project owner carries, equipment lead times and procurement strategy, scope splits, balance of plant, commissioning sequences, and how all of it drives real project schedule and cost. If your product touches project timelines, cost models, or construction milestones, this is where the accuracy lives or dies.
Policy, Regulation & Rates
Federal Power Act, PURPA, state rate cases, transmission formula rate filings, ERCOT private use networks, and grid modernization proceedings. Served as an expert witness in rate cases at the state and federal level.
Project Finance & Corporate Strategy
How energy projects get capitalized, what lenders and equity investors underwrite, asset valuation, and M&A of regulated and contracted generation assets. Including startup and PE-backed structures.
Data Centers & Large Loads
Powered land, siting strategy, interconnection for hyperscale and colocation, and what large load customers actually require from a power supply agreement. From single-site industrial through hyperscale campus scale.
Powered Land & Virtual Power Plants
Finding, evaluating, and structuring powered land — sites with existing grid interconnection, substation capacity, and speed-to-power advantages. Virtual power plant aggregation, dispatch optimization, and the contractual structures that make VPP economics work for operators and offtakers.
Power Trading & Market Operations
How energy actually gets bought and sold: day-ahead and real-time markets, LMP formation and congestion, capacity and ancillary services, settlement and uplift, hedging and PPA structures, and load management against price. Public market data diverges from settled reality in ways that matter for any product built on it.
Engineering & Technical Design
How a project is actually engineered: single line diagrams and electrical design, plant layout and general arrangement, equipment specification and selection, heat and power balance, protection and controls, and how design decisions early in a project drive cost and schedule later. If your product models anything about a facility, the engineering assumptions underneath it need to be right.

Matt Alvarez
Chief Commercial Officer, Offtake Energy | Chief Product Architect, OfftakeAI
With 15+ years of experience in Utilities Resource Planning, Finance & Policy, I have navigated the complexities of the Power & Utilities Sector. My most recent role at an Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) firm has helped me understand the cost of energy projects & project execution. Before that, I was part of the early teams at multiple energy startups, including one backed by a globally renowned private equity firm, where I saw firsthand what drives a high-multiple exit.
My background is rooted in energy, operations & financial modeling, with a strong focus on regulatory policy & strategy. I have led electric rate cases and transmission formula rate filings across five different RTOs, updated long-term Integrated Resource Plans, modernized power trading & load management applications, & structured mergers, acquisitions, & origination deals.
Within a regulated regional power market, I have led pioneering efforts that help Industrial Users access the benefits of the MISO wholesale power market. I have also served as an expert witness for Fortune 500 industrial clients in electric rate cases, advocating for their rights at the state level by challenging discriminatory practices and at the federal level by helping ensure protections under the Federal Power Act and PURPA are upheld.
Energy & Manufacturing Software Development
Most people in energy can't build software. Most people building software don't know energy. My career has been in the overlap.
At every stage I've become the lead product architect, holding technical ground on both sides. That built in-house planning, modeling, and optimization tools across gas, power & manufacturing.
Leading to the creation of OfftakeAI, an energy technology platform that matches Offtakers with Investors, then automates the energy project ecosystem from Origination to COD.

How engagements work
Start with a free conversation. From there, we find the right fit.
01
Free Consultation
A 30–45 minute conversation about what you're building, where the power markets complexity is slowing you down, and whether there's a fit. No agenda, no pitch. No commitment required.
02
Hourly
On-demand access for product architecture reviews, power markets domain validation, API design, market data strategy, or investor prep on your energy software business case. No long-term commitment. Rates discussed on the consultation call. Minimum 10 hours required.
03
By Product
A focused engagement scoped around a specific product, feature, or market design decision. We go deep on the problem — pricing logic, dispatch modeling, settlement workflows, or data architecture — and you walk away with a clear path forward.
04
Enterprise
An ongoing engagement for energy software teams that need a senior power markets and product lead working alongside their organization — covering roadmap strategy, market design, regulatory alignment, and commercial positioning. Scoped and priced per engagement.
